How to get hard disk size, don't see the icon

How can I figure out the hard disk size and how much is empty on it?

I searched and people suggested doing a 'get info' on the hard disk icon on the desktop, but I don't see it and going to preferences doesn't have the 'show drive icon on desktop' anywhere (that I can see!).

Also, is there a way to do this on the command line also?
 
Go to Finder -> Preferences -> General
Not the System Preferences, but rather the Finder preferences from the menu bar
That will let you show your icon for your HD
 
You can also open the Activity Monitor and click on Disk Usage. Here you'll see a graph of the space usage on all connected drives. Or use Disk Utility.

Is there a way to get a report on where/how I am using my drive?

e.g. a break down per folder

I can't imagine why I am using 250 GB! I wanted to get a 128GB SSD!

I've used jdisk report on my windows machine and it was great, but I just tried it on the Mac and it doesn't startup after I unzip the .zip file. It says "JDISKReport" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash".

I downloaded it a second time and got the same message.
