how to get mac to understand windows' file://server1/folder1/folder2/spreadsheet.xls

Hi,

Does anyone know how to make mac understand links to network resource links such as file://server1/folder1/folder2/spreadsheet.xls?

If i replace it with smb://server1.company.com/folder1/folder2/spreadsheet.xls
it of course works. The problem is, that i get constantly emails with such links from colleagues who use Windows.

I've tried to create entries in hosts file to solve this, but it hasn't worked so far. Has anyone else managed to solve this file:// --> smb:// mapping?

That is a standard URL. Your Mac should have no problem "understanding" it. The fact that it does not may indicate that the URL itself is not correct in some fashion.

file:// works on local files, or locally mounted, accessible files...

(e.g., create a mount to the server at root level: "/server1"; however, you'd still have to insert another "/" = file:///server1 )

Perhaps "file://" could be interpreted as "smb://" in email links with Applescript?
