How to get my movie collection on icloud

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of trying to get rid of my old Windows laptop and fully transitioning to just using the iPhone and iPad pro. I have about 40 movies from iTunes, but I also have about 200 more on my external hard drive in a variety of formats, some mp4, but others are AVI and mkv.

What I'm wondering is if there's a way to upload them to icloud so they could be available on both my iPhone/iPad as well as my Apple TV? I don't know if there's a way to show them right next to my purchased movies on iTunes, and that would be ideal.

I currently use a Plex server and that works fine, but it would be awesome to be able to consolidate.

No, not possible. You could upload them to iCloud Drive (or Dropbox or Onedrive) for download from an iOS device, but you can't really stream from there (they don't support HLS or another streaming protocol) and there's no way to access them from an Apple TV. Some 3rd party video apps may be able to access movie files on some cloud services via WebDAV, but that would be a sub-standard experience as well since it's not meant for streaming.

EDIT: Just remembered that there was "iMovie Theatre" which is really meant for clips and home movies, but it may work for full-length movies too. Not sure if it's still available, but in any case it's limited to movies in the format exported by iMovie (so mp4 with H.264 and AAC tracks):

I have ripped movies on sd cards, and I play them wirelessly on my iPad using a Ravpower FileHub. It drops the wifi from time to time, but for the most part it works fine.

I don't know about it playing mkv, etc... all my files are in iDevice-friendly mp4, level 4.2, 160kbps AAC. Converting in Handbrake before you ditch the laptop would make life easier later on.

I guess a service u could like Apple music but for movies/TV shows u can also upoad/add to iTunes catalogue ?

Could it good idea, but i don't think there would be many movies/TV Shows iTunes Store wouldn't really have in other counties..

Basically, if this were possible, copyright holders would be peeved. since Apple would be implying on a service for customers could upload movies to stream, yet they have not yet been officially released in that country. (since all of them uploaded would be pirated)..

It's different with Apple music, because Apple encourages "ripped CD's" and other sources...

You want PLEX mate with a NVIDEA Sheild Pro (or just keep your computer running).

Your essentially setting up your own personal Netflix, capable of being accessed easily from anywhere with internet (or get a plex pass and enable offline downloads)
