I'm trying to find out how to use Wine/Cider wrappers.

See also my poll:

I don't want to waste your time, but if any of you could help me with the following example that would be great!

I'm trying to get an Oblivion wrapper to work. I bought Oblivion from Steam under Bootcamp, and have downloaded it. I found the wrapper for it here:

http://portingteam.com/files/file/5928-oblivion-goty-steam-compatible/

This is the (relevant excerpt from the) readme that comes with the download:

THE ELDER SCROLLS IV - OBLIVION GOTY

Installation:

Steam installation:
Download Oblivion from Steam on your PC, and start it once, to be sure it's finished downloading and installed.
Copy the oblivion folder (in your Program Files (x86)/steam/steamapps/common/ folder) to the wrapper -> c_drive/Program Files/.

Copy every file in the "For Steam Version" folder into the oblivion folder (inside the wrapper at c_drive/Program Files/Oblivion/

Start game by clicking the Oblivion.app and choose "STEAM Version"

Problems:
OH NOES I ONLY GET A BLACK SCREEN!!!

Go into graphic options and TURN OFF HDR!!

My question is basically which of these actions I should do under Windows/ Bootcamp, and which under OSX:
  • Does the instruction mean download under Windows or OSX? It can't mean "download it under OSX", because Steam doesn't let me download a PC game under OSX.
  • Ok, so does that mean I need to copy the Oblivion folder while under Windows? If so, how do I do that? Does it expect me to copy 10GB of stuff onto a memory stick while in Bootcamp, then reboot into OSX, then paste that into c_drive/Program Files/Oblivion?
  • But how does that work, I don't have a C drive under OSX?
  • What's the point of copying and pasting something under Windows when I'm supposed to be able to play it under OSX? Isn't the point of the wrapper that it allows you to play it without Windows?

Sorry if I'm being obtuse.

For Cider hack wrappers like this, you basically need a fully installed and working version of the game from Windows, then move it over inside the wrapper to use. So yes it means install it and run it in Windows, then copy out the actual installed version to move to your Mac and put inside the wrapper. In a case like this Windows is only used for the install, not to run the game... once you get it set and put it in the wrapper in OSX, you double click it and run it just like a Mac app and play all you want without using Windows any more. Its easier to do a full port, but people put up empty wrappers so they don't get sued by having the game already in there... you just have to do the install so you have the actual game inside.

If it was Wineskin, you can do a full install fine directly with that and not need Windows, but I believe Oblivion and Skyrim both run slightly faster with Cider than with Wineskin right now.
