I've got an iPhone 4 with iOS5 that I have no plans to upgrade to iOS 6, as it would slow down the phone far too much.

However, my settings app constantly has the red dot with a (1) on it, to remind me that an update is available to update my iOS to version 6.

Is there any way I can get rid of it?

Updating is the only way to get rid of it (without jailbreaking).

There have been plenty of iPhone 4 users that have said that iOS 6 does not slow down the phone, some have even claimed it sped it up.

You can't remove that badge on Settings because its not a normal notification.
I would recommend that you install iOS 6 because my dad has installed it on his iPhone 4 and said he noticed some speed improvements. It hasn't made it slow at all. The only thing yo will give up is Google Maps.

Upgrade. Security, speed, features, maps, etc.

The only thing that sucks is the clunky App Store.

Only by jailbreaking. Also, iOS 6 removes the YouTube app as well as the Google Maps app.

I had debated upgrading iPad 2 from iOS 5.1.1 and decided to try iOS 6.01 and i'm glad I did. There's NO difference in speed and the battery life has improved as well. I'm now up to 36 hours between streaming radio, gaming, and web.
