iPhone How to get rid of Wifi network pop up?

Hi there,

Just upgraded to the iPhone 6s from a 5 - and from ios7 to 9.0.2. Overall, I'm happier with it than expected given the size of the thing. Few hiccups with the old backup and with getting the Exchange email server respond to the new phone, but nothing major.

What bothers me are really two things at the moment:

1) Is there any way to get rid of the wifi network pop ups? I've set the phone to "ask to join networks" just like my old one. I only want to be on networks I know and manually approve. Now I constantly get pop ups telling my that Joe Schmoh in the neighborhood has his unprotected Netgear router available or McCoffee is there to join. Other than always turning wifi off once I leave my house or office is there any way to stop it from doing this? No, I do not ever want to join any network unless I ask the phone to do so.

2) Is there any way to get rid of the Search and Siri suggestion page altogether? I constantly land there when trying to swipe back to my home screen and I have no use for this stuff.

Turning Siri off doesn't get rid of the page to the left of the home screen. It's blank but still there.

The device will only join networks you have previously joined (or "known networks"). Ask To Join does exactly what you don't want it to do, turn off that feature and it will no longer prompt you to join networks. If it joins a network you don't want to be connected to, forget the network in Wi-Fi settings.

Why would you not want to join known networks?

iOS devices definitely don't randomly join networks. If you have an AT&T phone, it will automatically join AT&T wifi hotspots, but you can disable that by connecting to one, and then opting to forget the network. Otherwise the phone only joins networks you've already used in the past.

To get back to the home screen rather than swiping a single click of the home button will bring you back to the first page

Well, mine is T-mobile and it does just that. I was walking the dog in the neighborhood and it hopped from private network to private network. No people I know or to whose network I've been connected to before.

Even with ask to join on it will still join those networks as you walk your dog. You seem to have what it does confused. It doesn't ask you before it joins any network. It asks you if you wAnt to join an unknown network.

Having it off will not stop it from joining networks. That just not how wifi even works.

Whoah. No iPhone I've ever owned has joined unknown networks automatically. That's ridiculous! It joins networks you have previously given the access key to, and the notification pop-up merely asks if you want to join *these* networks. Otherwise it will join them automatically, as you would want and expect it to.

Apparently no networks that require a code but there is plenty of open networks around here that it just latches on to.

Switch your wifi off then. If it did latch onto a network as you were walking past, no harm would be done. I can't say that I ever check when the phone is in my pocket.

Your phone will absolutely NOT join random networks, with, or without passwords. That would be a huge security issue. If your phone automatically connects to a Wifi netork, then it must have connected to it sometime in the past.
(None of this applies to Apple Stores. They can do what they want. Hahaha)

Well, it absoultely did it again today. Someone's xfinity wifi in downtown Boston. I have most definitely never been connected to that one. Not with the new phone or any other.

And yes, that is a security problem.

Sounds like you might have been connected to an xfinitywifi network at some point somewhere, so if/when it sees one (and they are everywhere) it will try to connect to it since it's a known network at that point. If you don't want that, aside from disabling the ask to join networks option, you should go to that particular network when you are connected to it and select the option to forget it, that way your device won't consider it as a known network and won't connect to it on its own (as is the case for known networks).

Nope. I only had the phone since Sunday. Never been on any xfinity network and have no reason to. I did already disable the "ask to join" yesterday. Now there are no more nag screens - it just connects to stuff.

that's weird. even the description under the setting (which is different when on and off) is as we describe it and not at all how you experience it. next time you are automatically connected to an 'unknown' network randomly please do check if you get the option to forget it.

Do you have a profile installed, perhaps given to you by your ISP or carrier or an app made by your ISP or carrier? Sometimes this will add known networks that you can use for free that you automatically join. Settings > General > Profile

Well, as far as I can see there are only two settings. My previous iPhone 5 on iOS 7 didn't act like this. So unless you are telling me my iPhone 6s under 9.0.2 is supposed to connect to my (unknown) neighbor's networks then I'm either still missing something or there is some bug at play here.
