I have a lot of songs on the itunes on my Mac and I would like to select some and get them on my iphone.
Can anyone please explain how you get selected songs, as opposed to all music that is on itunes, onto the iphone?
Thanks for any advice.

Set to manage your songs on your iphone manually under the music tab. Then just select the songs you want in your itunes library and drag them onto the iphone icon. You can use command and shift to select ranges or individual songs.

I'm in the same situation.

What I do is mark the Comment field with an x for songs that I don't want on the iPhone. I sync my iphone with a Smart Playlist of all songs without x in the comment field.

The reason I mark the songs I don't want is I want all new music to be added to the iPhone. After the initial markup on songs to exclude (duplicates, live songs, songs I don't care about so much) it's a playlist that is very easy to maintain.

Why not just create a smart playlist with the rule "added after date XX/XX/XXXX" then you don't need to modify tags. And sync with that playlist.

Setting up playlists and smart playlists is the way to go. You can sync the playlists you want with ease.
