My unlocked + jailbroken iphone's (1st gen with 1.1.4 firmware) speaker is busted (already tried headphones in/out procedure; did not fix). The warranty period has not expired. So, in order to make it "servicable" to be taken to the apple store for repair/servicing, I connected it to itunes (ver 8) and did a "restore". Now my phone says: "No SIM card installed. Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to active iphone". And then it says "Slide for Emergency".

So, having no ATT contract and SIM, how do I take it to the apple store to demonstrate the speaker problem and have it fixed? Any ideas? Thanks.

Say it was a friend of yours who had AT&T and sold it to you. You tried to activate it and had problems, hence they will activate it for you. Ask not to be put into contract when activated so you can check if everything works with the phone (in other words test drive it).

Then put a song in and press play, if no sound, warranty should cover it. Voila replaced iPhone.
