How to get Tivo files onto Apple TV 2

I have a series 3 tivo.

I downloaded a tivo recorded tv show using the https server to my windows pc.

I ran handbreak on it and handbreak didn't like it - said no supported file types.

How do I covert the tivo file to something that I can use in Apple TV?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the format of your Tivo capture? There are other applications that can recode your files to be Apple TV-friendly or at least HandBrake-friendly so that you can encode them for the ATV.

Can't help without knowing your source format, though.

I'm not sure if this is for TiVo Series 3 or just for TiVo premier, but I think you have to use Roxio Toast.

On MAC

I use the OSX app iTivo. It strips the Tivo encoding and imports the result to itunes, does a fair job of removing commericials also.

I forgot I bought VideoRedo (I think that's the name) a while back to make DVDs.

So I use that program to change it into a mpg file and then I use handbreak to turn it into apple tv format.

Seems like a lot of work but I'm getting better at batch handbreak and if I can figure out the same for VideoRedo and for getting it on my pc, then I'll be golden.

I have found over the years in trying to find an easy, automated way of getting my TiVo stuff into iTunes, that there is no good solution. The Toast "solution" that they provide really isn't a solution. I tried kmttg, and it didn't work for me. Audio and video were always out of sync in everything I downloaded. Also tried various other solutions mentioned above. But, it's been a while and maybe I just need to try again.

Really hoping TiVo eventually pulls their heads out of their asses and comes up with some sort of solution. At this point in the game, being able to transfer your recorded shows to your iOS devices should be a no brainer.

It's not a one step process, but I've done it. Download Direct Show Filter Dump from this page, which will convert the .tivo file into something you can use, and then use HandBrake to convert it for Apple TV use.

Yes, the last time I tried it, it is was buggy and unreliable...probably because it hasn't been updated in 2 years.

Odd -- I've been using it for a couple of years without many problems. I download all the episodes of a current season of the shows I watch using it. The commercial skip is often very good.

My only problem is that the download speed from the TiVo to my MacBook is often slow so I just let it ride overnight.

Here's a link to a TivoToGo FAQ which talks about conversion and includes a link to a description of Tivo Desktop 2.3 that includes a US$24.95 upgrade to Plus that is supposed to automate downloading and converting shows to MPEG-4 or H.264 video. This info is from 2006.

Reading about this gave me deja vu. I may have bought the upgrade years ago. I'm off to look...

TiVo Desktop software doesn't do conversions -- you need the "Plus" version of the software for that, and the Plus version is Windows-only. Toast is what you would use on the Mac. Unfortuantely, Toast continues to be a bloated and buggy piece of crap. I (and others, if you look at any relevant forums) run into problems with its video conversion hanging with no error message, consistently and in the same location on given files.
