2010 mac mini server, latest updates. i noticed the SMB is pretty old version:

Samba version 3.0.28a-apple

On apple website, the latest i see is: 3.4.4
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/samba.html

And even latest one i found would be here 3.5.2:
http://download.cnet.com/Samba/3000-18506_4-24811.html

Why does apple not updates such important part of the server SW package ?
How can i do so manually ?

this also relates to this :

Partially because it is not optional. Pretty sure the samba updates are bundled into the general OS updates. Most server admins want to do version changes on their own schedule; not Apple's. (e.g., need a security update but don't want to change the core samba service because working smoothly) The other problem is that Apple typically freezes on a version of Samba that is stable when Mac OS X releases. For example, 8-10 months before Mac OS X releases they pick a Samba target. After that they just backport security fixes to that version. The downside is that effectively means Samba is not updated by version for almost 2 years ( with next OS release). Since, Samba team was on a 6 month release cycle ( recently shifted to a more sane 9 month) that is a huge mismatch in schedules.

There are a couple different versions floating around. Also, often these "samba distributions for Mac " are just source; no binaries. The build process may be non trivial.
