Thought would post this here incase anyone else needs this help...

So after days and days of searching the internet and absolutely everything going wrong, I managed to upgrade my unlocked iPhone 2G 1.0.2 to 2.1. It was probably the most time consuming kind of hack I've ever had to go through. But really, should have only taken an hour or so if I had this advice. Now I'm sure there are other ways but this worked for me. And it may seem odd to Quickpwn before Pwnagetool, but this worked, where everything else didn't.

PROBLEM: iTunes 8, iPhone 2G, 1.0.2. unlocked with unknown hack/software. Want to upgrade to 2.1.

SOLUTION:

1) Virginize.
This can be done easily using a script downloaded via installer (many tutorials on this are all over the net). Though if installer is crashing, follow this:

http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13170

You can use terminal and cyberduck if on mac.

2) Restore to 2.1.
Just do a normal restore via iTunes 8. Your iPhone will be wiped and locked.

3) QuickPwn.
Run QuickPwn, do what it says. You iPhone is now unlocked and jailbroken.

You could stop here, and have a working unlocked iPhone with 2.1, but in my case it was really buggy.

4) Pwnagetool.
Create your pwned ipsw with Pwnagetool. Follow one of many online tutorials for this. If in expert mode, don't add additional packages. This avoids errors and you can always add them later via installer/cydia.

5) Restore with Custom IPSW 2.1
Unplug the iPhone.

If Pwnagetool as put your iPhone into DFU mode, hold the power down for 10 seconds to turn it back on.

Now, plug it back in. Option-click restore in iTunes and select your pwnd ipsw 2.1 file.

This avoids errors.

6) Sync and Complete.
All done.

Hope that helps somebody out there.

hi there,

I'm trying to go from unlocked 1.0.1....and cracking it the first time was saw exhausting I never tried to upgrade again.

Could you please elaborate on what was "buggy?" The entire process seems so complicated that I'm hesistating to try again.

Follow my guide and you should be fine.

After I used quickpwn, one bug was that when dialing a number, it would freeze for a few seconds. It also ran kinda slow and felt sluggish. After I used pwnagetool, the phone worked perfectly.

The reason I used quickpwn before pwnagetool is simply to get the phone unlocked and working with itunes so i could OPTION-CLICK RESTORE the pwned custom ipsw. Otherwise you have to do a DFU restore if the phone is still locked, and DFU restore kept failing.

Yeah it's a pain to upgrade (hence why I was on 1.0.2 for so long), though you really should, it's definitely worth it. Whilst 2.1 isn't drastically different, it does feel more solid and zippy.

thanks both of you. I'm someone who's hacked lots of things, but for some reason this phone makes me nervous!
