I want to purchase the new retina 5k iMac because the screen is beautiful. I currently have a 13 retina MBP with one 27 ACD. I was just going to purchase a second ACD and call it a day until this beautiful 5k monitor came out (I was also considering one of those LG ultra wide LCDs).

I would like to know how the best way to keep both computers in sync. I’ve never had two general purpose machines before and I’m apprehensive about purchasing the iMac knowing I’ll use my laptop at least 40% of the time. I have about 200GB of data on my laptop that would need to be synced with the iMac, so I don’t waste time or lose things (the rest of my data is connected to a FreeNAS box, so that’s easy enough to deal with).

Thanks!

Have you looked in to BitTorrent Sync? It doesn't sync to the cloud, it sync directly from device to device so wouldn't be any good if you only ever used your iMac or your MBP but never had them both online at the same time. It should sync resource forks between Macs I believe but doesn't sync them to non-Macs (e.g. Linux boxes etc). It's free to you've nothing to loose by giving it a try with a subset of your data.

Kind regards, Alec
