My wife and I are new iPhone users. How do I keep her iPhone from syncing to all the same data as my iphone? For example, she doesn't want all the same apps I have, nor all the same contacts, bookmarks, etc. Yet when we plug her phone in, the syncing starts automatically. How do I prevent her iPhone from downloading all my iMac data to her phone??

change the settings change what apps are synced by clicking on the app tap and choosing. same with music and video's. not sure on the contacts.
You know what? That's exactly what I did and iTunes responded with a popup window telling me that because the settings had changed, ALL my music, videos, etc. would be removed from my iPhone. That made no sense to me because I hadn't changed a thing about any of those, just un-checked selected apps.
Also, this wouldn't solve the problem of duplicate contacts (since there is no "contacts" individualized checklist), or the fact that syncing starts immediately upon connecting.
I think it would be best to just create an account for her so she can login under her own account with her own settings. There's fast user switching so it's almost instant to switch users. Other wise I don't really know if it's possible without changing the setting each time you want to sync to select what you want on each iPhone.
Okay, having just created a new account (in iTunes), I have logged her in and plugged in her iPhone and...guess what? ALL of my own iPhone data is STILL trying to sync into her iPhone! All my apps, all my contact info, still syncing to her.
As I am a social worker, it is imperative that I have a distinct and private account, because it is not permissible for my contacts (which are sometimes confidential) to sync to her contacts. Plus, I just don't want all of her apps coming to my phone, too. This system is just not working.
Any help?

When you plug an iPod or iPhone into a computer, it has a unique number that identifies it.
Point being, whatever sync settings you set while her iPhone is plugged into your computer will only apply to her iPhone.
Assuming you're on a Mac, iTunes can be set to only sync particular "groups" of contacts to an iPhone/iPod.
Set your iPhone sync settings to sync your group. Plug her iPhone in and set its sync settings to sync her group.
Same with music. Put the music you like into playlists for you, put her music in playlists for her. Have the iPhone sync the appropriate playlist for each user.
The default sync is to "sync all". Which means when you plug the phone in the first time, you're going to have to cancel the initial sync (which is going to want to put all music and contacts on each iPhone), setup all of your specifics on syncing, and then resync. After that, it should sync correctly each time you plug in.
