iPhone How to keep 3G alive with screen off ?

Hi,
I'm using my iPhone 3GS to tether internet connection using SSH via USB (not the normal tethering).

The problem is though that sometimes the SSH tunnel to my iPhone just seem to hang. I think it's because when the iPhone is locked, the 3G connection does not stay alive.

Is there a way to force the 3G connection to stay connected ? I tried the cydia app "Insomnia" but it seems to work only for the wifi, not 3G.

To my knowledge, the 3G stays connected at all times, as long as you have 3G service. There's even a tweak, Auto3G, that will turn off your 3G when your screen is locked, switching over to Edge, and then turn 3G back on when the screen is awake. This tweak is based on the fact that 3G will always stay connected.

That sounds more like a problem with your USB network connection than your cellular data and reading the README for usbmuxd it seems that it has issues at random times due to packet sizes or some such.

Strange because when start an app on the iPhone which prevents the screen from locking then it seems to work much better.

While this isn't a solution it could help in the mean time. You could install the SBSettings Auto-Lock tweak to quickly turn auto lock off and keep your display on.

this will work! i used to use it, but its not compatible with 4.3.2+ yet

I am pretty sure 3G is on when the screen is off. Or else how would notification from e-mails,facebook work?

no, I don't know if depend from mobile operator, but I've seen right now, that I changed operator from two months, that when iphone 4 with ios 5.1.1 goes in stand-by, it takes longer to receive push mails for example (5 minutes), because seems the connection is sleeping.
I don't understand.
Some ideas?
Previously I've not noticed with issue but may be that I've not perceived it
