iPod How to know if ipod is refurbished

How do you diferenciate a refurbished model from a brand new model? Is there something saying inside the box?

the serial number differs from new ones, for example for the ipphone 4 the serial number starts with 5kxxxxxxxxx. not sure whats the refurbished serial number for ipods though.
