Hey there,

I recently set up an old iPhone for my son to stream music and stuff while he's at home. I also setup ScreenTime to limit how much he is using the phone. I setup a limit for Music as well. But in fact this limits only the time he is actually using the Music app, but if he is not using it much, he can basically stream all day. Is there any way to limit the streaming or listening time within Music?

Cheers,
Stefan

I didn't understand this part. How is he streaming without using the app?

Screen Time>App Limits> Add limit>Choose Entertainment and select Music> Next> Set time limit and toggle on Block at End of Limit.
This doesn't work? Considering he is using Apple Music app to stream.

It may be that Screen Time only times how long the Music app is actually open, not how long it streams in the background.

Yes, that is how it seems to work. He can stream all day as long as he does not touch the app that often.

So, I guess there is no way to achieve that?
Are you sure that’s how that works? I have the same set up for my kid using my old iPhone and it’s tracking his usage of the music app properly, even while streaming music in the background.

So have you tested this theory? Easy to do, turn on screen for your device, play music in the background for a few minutes and check to see what it says after

I spent about 3 hours listening to music earlier today, mostly in the background. Screen time reports 4 minutes.

Maybe that’s the case, don’t remember off the top of my head.

not sure if you can change that part then. But if you guys have verbally agreed to a limit he should be using it, then just block the music app entirely if he’s not respecting the limit.

Shouldn’t always have to have safe guards built in just to get kids to listen. Mine tried to get sneaky and go around the YouTube app limit by going on through safari. Lost the phone for a week and took out safari when he got it back. He learned quick lol.
