Are they the Apple earbuds? 3rd party headphones/earbuds might not fit (re: probably won't), and it might not be completely seated. Belkin and Griffen have an adapter. I'll be getting one as soon as I can find one - my Bose Quiet Comfort won't work at all :(

Not really complaining, mind you. I'll take the simplistic design over larger jack housings.

Plug in the earphones before playing music. This is under the assumption you're using the earbuds that came with the iPhone.

Works either before or after playing - just a slight delay when it switches from internal to earbud.

The image below is how i solved that problem. in the pic there are 2 head jacks.

1. the one on the bottom is the normal one that won't fit on the iPhone because of the wide black base.

2. the one in the pic on top is the modified one. I scraped the black base off with an exacto knife so that the base is narrow enough to sit inside the iPhone jack.

it was either that or wait a month for belkin to deliver a 10 dollar adapter for the iphone. :D

edit: for those who were not familiar with the problem: the iPhone does work with standard 3.5mm headsets. the problem was that the iPhone case (the circular part surrounding the headphone jack) is so narrow that most headphone jacks wont sit all the way down properly

Boss1 is correct, and the Bose earbuds do not fit the iphone. I have the same problem. Bummer. Waiting for an adapter, or I might "carve up" my plug.

Thank you thank you thank you

I was having this same issue (iPhone earphones weren't working for iPod application of phone). I simply took them out, put them back in and overly made sure that they were all the way in... and viola - they work!

Thank gawd because now my coworkers don't have to hear me rockin out.

I like to use my UE Super.fi 5pro with a adapter on my iPhone. But the question is, do I need to unplug the earphone when I receive a call? Or I can hear the call through earphone and speak to the phone's mic? Thanks.
