i got my first mac yesterday(15'' 2.4 mbp).and i wonder if theres anyway to lock my mbp with a password, with all the apps running(without closing the led)??

another question- how to convert WMV files to a format with good quality to edit it in iMovie HD?? (other than flip4mac)

thanks,

If you set up your accounts (in System Preferences under Accounts --> Login Options) to enable fast user switching, you can choose to show the login window, which won't close any running programs.

Password: go to System Preferences > Security. Check "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver". If you use the screen saver (you can activate manually with hot-corner), an applications you are running will continue. Probably best, resource wise, to run a simple one - like slide show or even just Computer Name.

WMV: try iSquint or VisualHub

another way is to go to Keychain Access (Applications > Utilities) preferences and choose "show status in menu bar". It'll put a little lock icon in the menu bar, and if you click on it, one of the options is to lock the screen. It turns the screen black but leaves everything running, and requires your password to unlock.

ok i got it now :D,
when going out for awhile>>Sleep (it shuts the fans and keep everything quite).

when going to the toilet:p>>keychain-lockscreen(it just hides everything and all by apps are working normally).

,so(log out) has no use with me..im the only one using this laptop.

still wonder..how to safe sleep??

finally,completely got it!
when you put it to sleep the light in the front shines..while that the HD is saving an 'image' of everything ..once the light start lighting and dimming means that it is a sleep now!!
if you take off the battery and put it back..then power on your laptop..everything will be exact the same as before =)
thats VERY helpful..when using your laptop out.
