A lot of sites have a code than needs to be entered before you can sign up or send a message, how is this done?
 
It's called a CAPTCHA ("Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart").

Google for CAPTCHA, there's plenty of different implementations out there for all kinds of environments.
