How to make apps open on the monitor it is opened on ?

Sorry if the title is a bit confusing.

Is there a way to make applications open up on which ever monitor you opened the app from ? For example, if I open up Messages on my second monitor via the dock, how do I make it open on on that display instead of my main display ? I know the assign app to desktop monitor under dock options works, but if I decide to open up messages again on my main display, it will open pop up on my second monitor. Is there a way to do both ?

What's confusing is how Apple has managed to mess up such a simple feature. It used to work this way, but then Apple updated Spaces to Mission Control and now it works for some apps and not others, and only some of the time.

Because Apple's implementation is "iffy" at best, you'll need a 3rd party app. TotalSpaces will do the trick. Unfortunately, you have to do a little tinkering to get it to work under El Capitan (disabling logging in SIP) which they explain how to do in detail on the website. It's $12, and money well spent if you like to set up a bunch of different spaces for different apps.

Interesting, You are right, I set Notes on "all desktops" under the dock display options and it works...but it doesn't work on Photos or Finder. That app though seems neat, I'll have to try it out, thanks!

To compound the insanity. Set Mail app to full screen, then quit. When you relaunch Mail, it will remember that it was set to full screen and open that way forever. Try the same thing with Photos app, it starts in regular window mode every time.
