how to make compressed disk image?

in OS X Mavericks when you created a disk image it would compress the data but on OS X El Capitan and later there does not seem to be an option for compression, anyone knows a trick to persuade disk utility to compress?
I use disk utility regularly to make backups and not having the option to compress is a real problem.

Maybe try an earlier Disk Utility version, such as the one from Yosemite.

In Sierra's Disk Utility app you can definitely make a compressed disk image when choosing File>New Image>Image from Folder…
