What OS version are you running? The last OS that came on a disk was Snow Leopard. And the installer disk is not the same as a copy of your OS. Your OS won't fit onto a DVD. You can still buy Snow Leopard disks from Apple for not much money.

If you're on Lion or Mountain Lion, then you can boot up to the Recovery Partition and re-install the OS from there. You can also use the Recovery Partition to install the OS on an external drive. You can make a .dmg disk image using Disk Utility in the Recovery Partition, too.

Of course, you do have a copy of your OS as part of your Time Machine backup. ;)

Can I ask why it's important? It's rarely necessary to reinstall the OS unless you're installing on a new drive.

Well, i don't actually want to install it again!
What i actually want to do is to make a img/dmg file out of it, so then, later, i will extract boot camp's windows 7 support software.
And what you said about disk utility. it doesn't actually make an img/dmg file out of the os. What it actually does, is to make an img/dmg file of all your documents and things!
And for the time machine backup. Yes i do back it up on my time machine. The problem is, i don't know where it is! :(
Please help as soon as you can.
Thanks in advance! ;)
By the way, my os is snow leopard.
:D
