How to make Elgato Eyetv Hybrid work on Windows XP/Vista/7 - 32bit or 64bit

I already posted this in peripherals, but I think this may go better here.

Hey guys, I know a lot of us have the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid and would love to use it on our Macs in conjunction with Bootcamp & Windows. Well I finally figured out how to do it! All I had to do is slightly modify some Windows drivers.

The hardware being used is very similar to the Hauppauge USB Sticks.

Elgato made 2 versions of the hybrid; the older version without QAM and the newer version with QAM. (It has been brought to my attention they also have a new version out with radio capabilities).

I have only been able to test this on the hybrid WITH QAM.

I was able to slightly modify the Hauppauge drivers which allowed the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid to work under windows using both the Windows Media Center and the standalone player by Hauppauge.

So here is what you need to do:

Go to Device Manager

Vista users: Right click on Computer > Click Properties > Click Device Manager

Now you should see some devices under "Other devices" with a yellow question mark next to them. Both should be called "EyeTV Hybrid" There are two because the USB stick has both a digital and analog tuner.

Right click on either device > Click Properties > Click Details tab > Where it says Property, scroll down to Hardware IDs

If the bold numbers match, these drivers will work for you. (If they don't match please provide me with your numbers so I can try and make drivers that will work for you.)
USB\VID_0FD9&PID_0008&REV_0005&MI_03

Now we can close the EyeTV Hybrid Properties windows which brings us back to Device Manager.

Download both the modified drivers (an attachment below) and the manufacturer software here:

http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/install_cd/cd_4.6a+.zip

Unzip and open the manufacturer software, navigate to the Drivers folder, and replace: HCWemBda.inf and HCWemBda64.inf with the modified drives you downloaded from me. (You also have to unzip and open the folder you downloaded from me).

Now go back to your Device Manager window, Right click on one of the EyeTV Hybrid devices with the yellow question mark next to it and click Update Driver Software...

Click Browse my computer for driver software > Click browse and navigate to the drivers folder from the manufacturer's software > Click Ok.

Do the same for the other device in Device Manager.

Now go to the manufacturer's software you downloaded earlier and double click Setup.

Finish the install and you should be Done :)



NOTE: People with a different version of the hybrid than me: Please let me know what your Hardware ID is as described in the steps above. Thanks

Have you tried this with Windows 7?
Mine shows four Eyetv items in device manager without the yellow question mark.. (No modified drivers.) So I assumed that Windows 7 correctly identified it and put the correct drivers in automatically.
1 for analog tuner, 1 for analog sound. Same for digital.
Problem is that it doesn't receive any signals over cable when in mediacenter. Get a decoder error when trying to click on Live TV link.
Do I need some other software for mediacenter to work with this?

Yes, You have to install WinTV software to make it work in MediaCenter.

Will not work otherwise...

You never have to use the WinTV player, but you must install it to make the device work.

That installation package installs the "Hauppauge MCE Soft Encoder" which allows it to play in MediaCenter.

Not sure how you did it without it???

Also have you already figured out how to modify the drivers because you said you have done this in the past?
 
I just update the drivers on the unknown device and pointed them to the driver folder in the unzipped package. It then installs the drivers from there.

Windows 7 supports my card out of the box as well.

Elgato Eyetv Hybrid? Just wondering because you said card.

Stock drivers did not work for my tuner. What is your hardware ID?

Oh ok, this thread was about the EyeTV Hybrid, AKA HVR-850/HVR-950.

That explains the differences you are experiencing.

It doesn't work for the eyetv hybrid. Trust me I have tried it...

You have a device that is completely different from the piece of hardware we are discussing in this thread...

It says right on the Hauppauge site that you need this software to run it (The HVR-850/HVR-950) in MediaCenter.

I'm not sure what the point you are trying to make here is...

We are talking about a specific product and you come in talking about something totally different. Apples and Oranges man.
 
My point is you don't need to install the WinTV software if you use the device manager to update the drivers. Failing that the Hauppauge installer does have separate installers for the drivers and WinTV software over on Windows.

Check hauppage FAQ if you do not believe me ;)

Plus first hand experience with the actual device is better than your assumptions.
 
different hardware ids

Hi wakerider,

I have found your post very interesting. The problem is that I couldn't achieve to install de hybrid elgato device on my vista pc.

I have tried to do it by myself, but i supposse that i have no idea about modifying the files, hehehe.

My hardware Ids are:
USB\VID_0FD9&PID_0018&REV_0100
USB\VID_0FD9&PID_0018

Could you please help me?

Hi Wakerider,

Yesterdfay I received the latest eyetv hybrid for European market. It has Analog, Digital and cable TV plus FM. To my disappointment, this tuner does not have vdig driver, so I can't use it with quicktime broadcaster and Wirecast.

Do you know if the hauppauge Mac driver can fix this?

In the meantime, I'd like to use it on Windows XP. My device ID is:

USB\VID_0FD9&PID_0018\081004008343

Would you be kind to send me the modified driver for my ID?

Too bad ElGato begun making their own hardware in the 2009 version of the EyeTV Hybrid. While there was improvement in performance, this means it won't work on the Windows side, since ElGato hasn't released drivers for Windows (as far as I know).
