How to make zoom the default behavior?

I searched to see if this was already discussed but did not find it so sorry if I am repeating a question that has likely been asked/answered...

I'd like to find out if anyone has figured out a way to reverse the new behavior of the zoom button (now maximize) so that zooming is the default behavior and maximize works by holding down option.

IMO, zoom functionality is superior & nonetheless Apple made maximize the default to appease users confused by zoom (i.e., recent switchers). Often maximizing creates a ton of useless white space which hides more useful stuff &/or generates very long lines of text which greatly reduces readability, so making maximize the default means popular stupidity won, which used to be very un-Apple.

There's no way currently. But you can double-click the titlebar to get the old behavior.

there is no way at this time.

the general consumer likes full screen better than zoom.

as you're in the minority, they added a step before you can achieve zoom.

not to mention apple is all about module computing (one app/one task at a time) and full screen supports this theory.

You can press "alt/options" key and click the 'zoom' button and it will zoom instead of full screen.

Thanks for tips! I still think this change is like telling the Dutch they should pronounce Van Gogh like the English speaking world ;-) Seriously though, zoom is smarter & smarter should prevail (by default at least), IMO.

Not to drone on the same topic; however, I think trying to please everyone is how Windows is crappy. It indeed seems popular yet where is the logic in making lines of text unreadably long or producing useless white space that covers up otherwise useable ui elements. Zoom is not as simple to understand, yet what it does is superior.

The original zoom option was very unpredictable, and inconsistent in what it actually did to the window.

Pleasing the majority, whilst still leaving other options (alt+click), seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Zoom makes the window the best size. This is consistent with all Apple apps I use. In apps with a page layout like Safari it would expand the width to the width of the page, in photo apps it would make the window fit the image including making the window smaller if there's useless white space surrounding the image, in apps that could make full use of the screen, the app would fill the screen. It's not rocket science, by nature though it is not as simple as Maximize. Zoom is more versatile, logical & useful.

PS: if you zoom a webpage on a small laptop screen vs. a wide external monitor, the width will likely be the same or quite similar. Now maximize this webpage on a small laptop screen vs. a wide screen monitor. It may look ok-ish on the laptop, but on the wide monitor 9 times out of ten, with maximize the result is going to be bad in the sense that there is going to be a ton of useless white space and/or very long lines of text that are difficult to read and some mouse targets are going to be spread out across a wide area, all of this comes with no benefits other than it's very easy to predict how poor the result of using maximize will be.

Apple can't please everyone, but I see no reason not to allow an option in System Preferences to change the default between fullscreen and zoom. In other words reversing the roles.

Whilst I like this change in some circumstances, I can understand the frustration and would like to see Apple introduce an option in the future to allow the default behaviour to be changed.

Maybe it is worth submitting a request feedback.

Thanks for sharing that. Somehow I missed that feature in XtraFinder. I have given it a try but unfortunately it only works for 'finder windows' and not any other window such as safari, mail... etc.

Also Xtrafinder uses 'Command key' + green button for opposite behaviour while OS X uses 'alt/option key' + green button for opposite behaviour.

Although I am generally happy with fullscreen button, I really think Apple should give an option in System Preferences to toggle the default behaviour.
