Morning all, just a quick question.

A while back I purchased a custom ringtone app which allowed me to create ringtones from any song in my iTunes library.

Now that the new iTunes removed the ability to sync ringtones I’m not sure how I would manage these custom ones. They are not downloads so I can’t manage them from the device. iTunes on my Mac sees them as ringtones but won’t allow me to remove any of them, just view them.

So since these are more custom than downloads I’m not sure how I would remove these from my devices if I wanted or needed too.

Any ideas welcome! Thanks ..

In iTunes 12.7.0, after the device is connected click on "Tones" under the device in iTunes, then drag and drop.

That's how i did it and it appears on the phone straight away... You can remove them directly on the phone...

What happens when u connect the phone and go to "Tones" under iTunes, can you delete any from there?

Thanks for the reply! I haven’t tried to trag and drop. When I connect my device to iTunes I can click tones and see them, but can’t uncheck or sync anything. It’s really just a summary of what’s on the device.

On the device they are all there in sounds/ ring tones, and oddly a few don’t work any longer but still are there. Couldn’t really find a way to manage these specific custom tones but I will try to drag and drop..thanks!

Edit. So all my custom tones are already on my devices. I can’t find any way to delete any of them.

I had to download the "older version" of iTunes (thread about it and location on IOS thread) and it gives back ability to manage ringtones.

Thanks for the reply, and yeah I’m getting the feeling any created custom ringtones you just can’t manage through the new iTunes. There is no way to delete them from the device or add more if I wanted to.

The new versions will only allow you to manage downloaded tones purchased through iTunes.

So if they are on the device they just stay there.

Anyone find a work around for this yet with the new iTunes?
Works fine for me using this method. Scroll to middle of page until you see:

If you can't manually add or remove content from your device

It's not as good as the old way via iTunes, but it works. Keep in mind the tones need to be in m4r before adding them.

My problem is I want to remove them from my device. Well the ones I don’t use anymore. I made about 26 custom ringtone and they were synced to my devices before the iTunes update.

Since the removal of the App Store and tones management I haven’t been able to find a way to remove any of them.

I guess I could just keep them, and use this method to add new ones if I chose to make any more.

Bu can’t wait to get home and see what I can do.

The method that I linked to allows you to delete tones. I have ~122

So yesterday I bought my iPhone X. Took it home, plugged it into iTunes and tried to restore from last backup.

iPhone updated to 11.1 and restore went flawless, except for my custome tones lol. For some reason they didn’t cross over from my 6 plus to my X. Everything else went fine.

So I guess now I would have to get them back to iTunes someone from my iPad or old phone.

Yep, I learned the same lesson when I restored my iPhone X from my 6 Plus iTunes backup.

You might have luck with iBackup Bot or similar program.

Oh so you ran into pretty much the exact same issue. Yeah I think I just may let them go lol. Keep them on my iPad for the time being.

Same issue regarding ringtones not being transferred in the iTunes backup. I have local copies of all of my tones.

Go to settings>sounds>ringtone>. You will see ‘Download all purchased tones’. You will find the tones you bought from iTunes. Any that you made yourself or got from another source, I think they have gone.

Hey man thanks for the reply, but yeah these were custom not purchased so nothing shows up. I don’t own any purchased iTunes tones so when I go to settings >sounds > ringtone download nothing comes up unfortunately.

I can't believe that after all these years, there isn't an easy way to install custom tones like on every other phone since the flip phone!

You can still make custom ringtone, google it. I may be wrong but I believe that you cannot transfer them from one iPhone to another. No doubt somebody will be along shortly to prove me wrong.
