My new i5 quad core iMac with HDD and SSD arrives today, to take over from my old mirror-drive G4 tower running Tiger. I gather that the SSD should be used primarily for OS and programs, HDD for data files. I suppose that when I use Migration Assistant everything will go to the SSD. Am I right? And once things get there, can I just drag and drop data folders to the HDD and expect that the applications that created them will find them there? The last computer I had with multiple drives was my old OS/2 box; not sure how OS X would handle them.

TIA

Another possible approach?

Or should I migrate to the HDD, then just drag the applications folder to the SSD? Seems that would probably cause problems with settings, unless they are transferred in a sepatate step with a different target.

SuperDuper

I talked with an Apple tech rep today. He said that using Migration Assistant directly from Tiger/PPC to Intel iMac sometimes failed to transfer data files. (Our daughter ran into this problem.) He said to make a clone of the G4 HDD on an external HDD, migrate from that to the iMac (after disconnecting from G4 I suppose), then drag and drop data files from SSD to HDD on the iMac. Another column I found said that when the iMac boots up for the first time it asks for an admin name and password; don't give it the old one--give it a new one (you may need a second or third one anyway). Then when the clone is migrated, the old user names etc. come with; otherwise not.

iMac arrived today; right now I am defragging the G4 HDD prepartory to making a clone.
