Seen several threads now, where people somehow know what clockspeed the core2 is running at, and some talk about turning one core off, to save energi.

How is all this done? Any software to monitor the clock-speeds?

you can measure the clock speed with coreduotemp and ministat2.
You use Chud to turn a core on/off, it's on your OS X install discs somewhere. Beware that if you disable a core, the other will run at the highest clock, making your notebook very hot, and effectively negating any achieved reduction in power consumption.
