How to not sync a group from address book to iCloud?

So I just got my new MBP since my second generation just died (truly sad!) and have decided to start keeping better records of my contacts. I also want to start using iCal and Address Book with my family so we can keep better track of each other now that we'll all be synced up. I have managed to mess around a bit and solve most of my issues, but due to its wordiness, my question has been difficult to locate in previous posts.

We keep a lot of personal info on our computers (i.e. warranty dates, when things have been purchased, passwords) and had in the past stored them in Outlook. Basically we'd make a contact and store the info in it. This is probably not the best method, so if there's a better way, feel free to throw it at me so I can avoid this whole issue.

Anyways, I've updated my Contacts on my MBP and synced it to my iPhone via iCloud. Great! However, I don't want every "Contact" in my Address Book synced with my iPhone.

So here's the question: Is there a way to create a Group in my address book, that stays only on my computer and NOT synce to iCloud while still having my phone contacts stay synced with iCloud?

Oh, bummer. Any ideas on how I could set up a safer way to store important data besides in a Word doc?
 
Yes, you can.

Open Contacts on Mac. At the bottom there's 3 buttons together: select the first one with the depiction of 'group—list—contact'.

Any group created under On My Mac does not sync with iCloud, which has its own section there too.

If you have a ton of passwords, I would suggest something like https://agilebits.com/onepassword, which integrates with Safari. It can also keep track of many other things, like credit cards and IDs, and I'm sure it's easy enough to create a folder and give each item bought its own thing in the list, where you can work with price and date fields and enter whatever you want in the notes field.

There is also Wallet, though I have never used it and I feel like it is simpler, with less features, but I'm not sure.
 
Figured it out! To anyone else who may read this and be lost - in order to get three different groups (All Contacts, On My Mac, All iCloud) into your Address Book on your Mac do as follows.

Open up Address Book, go to Preferences, then in the General Tab, change 'Default Account' to On My Mac Simply done any allows you to have a list of contacts that sync to your iCloud (and iPhone, iPad, etc.) and a list that stays on your Mac.

You could use Bento and create a home inventory database. You could store all of your date of purchase and warranty info in there. Good thing to have if you ever need to file a claim on your homeowners/renters insurance or something like that.

So the solution here starts with:

"Open up Address Book, go to Preferences,"

WHAT IS ADDRESS BOOK ?!?!! Do you mean CONTACTS? Do you mean to click the "Addresses" button at the top of my Mail page? Neither one offers a "Preferences" option. I'm using Mountain Lion.

I have been googling for an hour to see if Contacts and Address Book are the same thing, but it seems they're not.... perhaps? I'm about to get an iPhone 5, my first iPhone, and just dread getting all 1400 of my "contacts" iClouded into the phone. I just need a few dozen to be synced.

Thanks -- found the answer. iOS 6 calls it Contacts, whereas iOS 5 called it Address Book. Same thing.
