What do you mean by "in the background"? If I right-click on a link in Safari and choose "open link in new tab", then I remain on the same page and it opens in a separate tab, which is hidden. Is that what you want? Here's a screenshot of what I see when I right-click on the "Roundups" link while viewing this thread, for example

yes that is exactly what I want, but when I do that, the "new" tab opens forcing me to view the new tab and not the original tab....does that make sense?
