Hey guys i own an iMac G5 2.1GHz, 1.5GB Ram. I am wondering how can i boost the performance of my machine. I have noticed that boot up takes a little while (53.76 seconds). I am not sure if there is anything you can do to boost the performance of an iMac this is my first Mac so i am new to all the performance boosts and stuff like that. So if there is anything i can do to make my iMac run a bit better and boot up faster please let me know. Thanks.

Welcome to Macs. :)

Well, go to System Preferences and see what's listed in the Login Items under your Accounts pane.

Since you're new to Macs, you may be unaware that we actually rarely shut down the computer hence the irrelevance of start up times. Sleep mode uses almost no power, is safe for your files and gives you a practically instant start up. It's completely different to any equivalent on Windows.

I am aware that we rarely shut down our Macs. I rarely shut mine down. I was just noticing during a restart that it took a while. But since i am new to Macs is there any other little secrets that you may want to let me know about that i may not know about to make my Mac experience that much better?

Doesn't the G5 have processor energy settings? If so, go energy saver, select options, more, and put processor to "highest."

The Processor is set to Highest. I just found it weird that if you look at the video of that guys MacBook Pro it takes 35 seconds to start up and mine takes 54 seconds. But he has a Dual Core 2.0 I have a single core 2.1, he has a fresh out of the box Intel Mac i have a 3 month old iMac with 100GB of used space on the Hard Drive. I have 1.5GB of ram where as he only has the standard 1GB. So i guess those are factors that contribute to him being faster than i at boot up speed. If there is anyone else out there that has a similar G5 iMac as mine and can time their boot up time I would be interested to see how it matches up.

i hope you didn't buy your mac for the sake of having a Fast "start up" time...

OMFG I just lost another 20 seconds of my life... =)
Serious: If you don't give the CPU time to sleep or chill (energy settings), you'll get best performance.

if you have a large amount of fonts installed on your system that will slow it down massively, i had approx 1500 fonts on my machine, and it used to take a few minutes to start up, once the fonts where removed it would start up straight away

I dont think processor speeds have a significant effect on startup times. Most likely it will be things like the hard drive and whats installed on the system.
For instance my ibook boots ~42 seconds. And its definitely slower than your imac.

Open Firmware takes up some time. The time it takes from pushing the power button to hearing the startup chime is longer on a Quad than on a B&W G3.
Having a huge amount of RAM installed, lots of extra hardware (Airport, BT, extra PCI cards etc.) could contribute to how long it takes until you get your desktop working.

But who cares.

I don't judge the speed of a computer by its boot time, as long as it stays reasonable (i.e. no longer than a minute or two).
