How to position cursor precisely on an iPhone running iOS 9.3.x?

So I'm trying to find ways where I can easily control cursor position on my iPhone.

example:
I type the following phrase/sentence on Messages: I have a pet cuck.

I want to position the cursor just after the u in the work "cuck" and correct the spelling. Any ideas on it came be done --without-- resorting to jailbreak (which is not even possible on my version anyway).

Tap and hold to get the magnification effect to position the cursor to where you need it?

or 3D touch the keyboard if you have 6S or 6S+.

If you have a Plus phone you can rotate to landscape mode and there is a cursor back and forward button on the keyboard.
