How can I do this? How can I create custom firmware? I don't quite understand.

Thanks.

do you have a mac?

if so download and run the pwnagetool and follow the instruction on it

ok well build a custom IPSW on ur Mac copy it to your PC and restore through itunes on your windows machine

is yellowsn0w even stable yet? Last time I used it, I couldn't get any signal.

Not too sure if I understand... If I can get my friend, who has a Mac, to use PwnageTool to make me a custom IPSW and send it to me, I can put that on my phone via iTunes without WinPwn?

I downloaded 2.2.1. I used Pwnage Tool to create custom restore file. It then tells me to put phone into recovery mode and restore with custom file.

However, when I go into recovery mode, there is no option in iTunes to select my custom bundle. It only wants to have me update to 2.2.1 (I assume the real version) and then restore. Is there somewhere in this process to select my custom bundle rather than Apple's?

Now, I consider myself a fairly smart person, but after seemingly endless research, I am still unsure as to what settings in PwnageTool will create an IPSW with the proper 02.28.00 baseband firmware. It's gotta be the "Enable Baseband Update" checkbox, which is greyed out for me, in the General settings, or maybe something in the Bootneuter settings.

One set of instructions for jailbreaking and unlocking from iClarified, tells you to download two bootloader files, but that is for a 2G, and I have a 3G.

I'm still not sure if it's worth it to upgrade my already JBed 3G from 2.2, but I like to know these things if I get a hankering.

jdonshik: Hold Option (if your a Mac user and Shift, if yours a windows user) + click restore in iTunes and u can then select your custom IPSW.

Nanook: As long as "Enable baseband update" is not checked the firmware you build will not upgrade the baseband and it will stay at 02.28.00 (By default the pwnagetool does not update the baseband, this is the main advantage of it).

Bootneuter is what is used to unlock a 2G phone so you can ignore this. The BootLoader files (3.9 and 4.6) are for the 2G unlock too so this bit can be ignored.

Im personally not going to upgrade (too much hassle) ill wait for a more major update.

I have one query:
My relative is supposed to buy an iPhone 3G for me from Canada and get it to my Country next week. However, he has yet to purchase the iPhone, so is there any way to check what Firmware/Baseband it is bundled with?
Thanks in advance!

DannyBres: Thanks. Your suggestion worked perfectly. It is a bit of headache to install software and restore all iTunes apps. I still have to install the several JB apps that I have. Used AptBackup though. Will see how it works.

sparkyms: I did read this about 6 times. The problem that I was having was the restore of the custom created software that DannyBres told me how to fix.

Sorry Jdonshik, my post wasn't really direct right at you. I just thought it might very well be easier for the OP to read that guide rather than every-one chime in with what they thought.

When using Pwnage, after the Custom IPSW is created it tells you how to upgrade it in iTunes. Like DannyBres says, hold option and it should let you find the IPSW that you created.
