How to prevent MBP from auto power on

I just contacted Apple but they were not able to help me with this issue:

How do I prevent my laptop from powering on when the screen is opened? There does not seem to be anything in the Preferences to toggle for this.

Is there a Terminal command or third party app that would prevent the laptop from turning on unless the power button was pressed?

macOS 10.13.4
MBP 15" 2017 2.9GHz

Perfect. Also shows battery power upon opening the lid now - another feature I was missing from the old MBP battery indicator button. THANKS!!!!
