Other How to properly backup and restore??? I am going crazy!

Hi!

I was always in favor of clean install but having kids around, so many apps with passwords/setups/ credit cards etc.i really wanted to full backup/restore.

So far it is just a big headache! I use encrypted itunes backup, and still do not get my in app passwords transferred properly. All my apple pay credit cards needs to be confirmed with banks individually.

Homekit does not work properly, have so many smart light, locks, outlets.... all showed up with errors.

Is this what it supposed to be?

What am i doing wrong?

Please advise!

My encrypted iTunes backup restored everything except the 3 digit number on the back of the credit cards which I think is restricted at the request of the bank. Have always had to reinsert these 3 digits. Other than that all passwords, images, music and other data 100% restored and it only took 10-15 minutes.

I always use iTunes when restoring a new phone, never had any problem. I do use the cloud at night while charging but back up once a week to iTunes. Do not trust the cloud to save everything that is so important to me.

OP - What you explained is normal. There are some things that are not restored for security purposes or due to the request from other service providers. E.g. I always have to setup my Apple Pay stuff after a restore. None of my bank apps login work etc.

No, you will not get all your in app passwords back and you'll have to log in again on various apps. That's normal.

Storage is cheap but I still would trust everything that is important to you in the Apple cloud.

They give you some free storage. You would have to pay if you go beyond that. But it's enough for several phone backups.

iTunes encrypted backup and iCloud backup should be the same. I usually opted for iTunes since it's a bit faster and it will transfer my music at the same time as I still manage my music through iTunes. iCloud backup works in a pinch (eg. on the go), but restoring can take a long time, depending how much data and apps you have as all are being downloaded through the internet.

Re-logins are normal. Some apps need to be re-verified as well. Cannot comment on HomeKit as I don't use it. So far I never had issues with either methods of restoring.

They give you some free storage. You would have to pay if you go beyond that. But it's enough for several phone backups.

I would need to go to at least $2.99 a month just for that simplicity. Not saying that’s too much but I can just do it for free so I don’t really see the point myself.

I had to re-enter passwords for "myQ" (Chamberlain garage door), "Ring" (doorbell camera), "CreditKarma". Also had to re-enable Wifi Calling.

Restored from encrypted backup from iTunes.

When they first introduced iCloud backup, the 5GB wasn't enough for my 64GB (or whatever it was at the time). So I just used my brain a little. Why backup Facebook? That's silly. Just download it again and log in. I sync my music from iTunes, so that was pointless to backup. I could just re-sync after the fact. There was some games where I didn't really need saved games saved in the cloud. By default it wants to backup everything. But not everything needs to be backed up.

It took a minor amount of effort. But those free 5GB served me well (phone and iPad) for years simply by applying a little thought as to what gets backed up. Of course these days I'm at the 200GB plan, but that's for my photos. And that's worth every penny too. Knowing I can take a photo and have it show up on 4 different Apple devices plus two backups (iCloud and my own local backup) without any thought from me is heavenly.

No I wasn't discounting the ability to condense, I just meant my hard data that I want to backup requires a 200GB tier at minimum. I posted a picture of my storage, which made me doublecheck math and they're way off somewhere because photos and messages accounts for 210.89GB according to the summary at the bottom. I don't really have any apps on my phone, and what I do are of course themselves cloud sourced and I would just need to download them

The only time I tried doing an iCloud restore, the restore failed with some error and I ended up just having to set up the device as new. I've refused to use iCloud for backups ever since. One time was one time too many.

I've been doing iTunes backups ever since and always will.

I've used icloud for backup/restore on my last several phones. All without issue.

For our ipad and 3 phones the free 5gb was enough. It's not saving the actual files just the information and your phone redownloads from the app store.

Unfortunately I don't have that luxury unless the only things I want to back up are settings, my messages alone tally almost 100GB

100GB in messages?! Wow! Anyways, have you at least tried the backup? It's definitely not a 1 to 1 ratio. Meaning that what you see for your iphone storage is not what it will actually use from your 5gb icloud storage. It must not count everything against that limit.

Lol yeah there’s a lot. And yes I have tried it and it tells me I need to upgrade my iCloud Storage which is what swayed me a while ago from even bothering, it’s not a big deal to just take the time to back it up to my computer.

Best of luck to you! If that were me, it would get backed up multiple times the first week or two then eventually drop down to getting backed up every month of two when I thought about it. Murphy's Law would dictate that when it's needed most, my backup would be the most out of date.

Thankfully, Apple has my bad memory covered. It's backed up when I'm on wi-fi and plugged in. If I need a backup, I'd be 1 day behind, at most.

I hope that works for you. My intentions would start good but a bad memory combined with laziness would be my downfall.

Been trying to restore my XS Max for 3 days now. Lyft, Pokemon Go, Google Maps all cause the phone to crash and restart, whether using iOS11 backup, iOS12 backup, or DFU-restored clean-device. What a letdown. Can't find any information on this anywhere on the net...

I think I'm just going to return this and stick with my X. What a terribly launched device...
