how to properly reset a macbook before sales

i have a friend eho has a macbook air not sure which version tho i think its pre 2016 anyhow he wants to sell it since he upgraded but we dont know how to properly reset it so that the new owner can use it and activate it without it becoming an expensive paperweight

It's fine, just follow the directions in the linked Apple support document that apply to the machine.
