how to re-lock iphone and restore bootloader?

hi,

I've searched for this answer, but everyone just refers to re-locking or restoring your iPhone, but doesn't make it clear how exactly you have to do it. I've got an iPhone unlocked with iPlus 2.0b, with bootloader 3.9FB. I'd like to restore it to a locked state with the normal bootloader (4.6?). If I just do an iTunes restore with my original ATT sim in there, will that upgrade the bootloader properly as well?

thanks for any quick response. I'm sure this is dead easy, but the lack of actual details in people's posts makes me a tiny bit worried to mess it up.
 
don't mean to hijack your post, but I know what you're feeling. I'm looking forward to unlocking the phone (when I need it), and like you, I'm worried about how to relock and restore the bootloader after that.

any people out there that have unlocked and relocked before?

Im not a true expert here, but I would venture to guess that you would need to upgrade to 1.1.4, pwn your phone and change the bootloader back to 4.6. Following that you could probably restore to an original apple ipsw and be okay.

I'm already on 1.1.4. It seems odd to me that, for all of the discussion about iplus vs. ziphone being that you can reverse everything that iplus does, no one actually details the steps required to actually reverse them. They were allegedly reversable prior to the release of pwnage, so I'm surprised that it would require using pwnage to revert.

If I'm not as worried about the bootloader, can I just restore to 1.1.4 using iTunes and it'll be relocked and pristine as new?

I'm actually not even sure which bootloader it was on prior to the unlock in any case, so all of this may be pointless concern. When the phone came it was on 1.1.2.
 
hmmm... i think pwnage is your only option. your phone most likely came with 4.6. However if it didn't you may be able to just restore using iTunes yes. That depends on the serial number. If your jailbreak did indeed bring it to 3.9 you will need to restore it if your going to bring it in for warranty reasons.

I'm still not comfortable with pawning yet, to be honest. But that's just because I assume pawnage leaves trails (I'm saying this based on nothing, hence the "assume".)

I'm using iLibertyX at the moment, and under Payload, there is a "Upgrade Bootloader from 3.9FB to 4.6". I haven't tried it, but it does sound promising. any idea?

hey -- this FAQ is great, and I really appreciate the advice. My only question is how to figure out if I should have 4.6 or not, as I didn't write it down. I'm pretty sure it was an 1.1.2 OTB iPhone, which the faq mentions offhandedly as being one that should have 4.6. Is there a way of checking this out definitively using the serial number?

Pwnage leaves nothing if you put re-lock the phone and put the baseband back to the the one it came with and restore in iTunes and then set it up as a new phone in iTunes.

It totally removes all the software trickery done to the phone.

I restored one of my phones myself - I selected BootNeuter relocked and un-neutered the baseband then restored in iTunes and it was as factory state.

All phones from 1.1.2 came with bootloader 4.6.

When you load BootNeuter it will detect your current settings and come up with this screen

Assuming you used pwnage and clicked on unlock and neuter baseband then it will show the above settings for a new phone.

On a ZiPhone phone it will show 3.9/Neuter On/Unlock On.

On an iPlus phone it will show 3.9/FakeBlank On/Neuter On/Unlock On.

If you want to set it back to factory conditions then select the correct bootloader and turn off everything else and click on Flash - it takes between 5-10 minutes.

There is also a way to use BootNeuter WITHOUT using Pwnage.

You can add the source below to Installer and download and install it:

(To add it click on "Sources" on the bottom right hand side of the installer screen, then click on "edit" in the top right hand corner and then click on "Add" in the top left hand corner and enter the above address then click on OK and it will add the source - I believe it is in the "Tools" category when it is loaded)

I am pretty certain from feedback it works fine so you can try it without pwning your phone first.

I don't know if it shows your phone as unlocked when the phone has been used with ZiPhone/iLiberty/iPlus BUT as before select what you want as far as bootloader and unlock goes and press flash!

REMEMEBER TO UNLOCK YOU MUST NEUTER BOOTLOADER AS WELL!

When it has flashed the phone you will not have any signal until you restart the phone.

Please let me know if you have any questions and how you get on if you use it on your existing phones without pwnage.
 
Older Unlocking Method

You said if I have questions from unlocking it another way... weLL!

I unlocked with a method I found on "pantsland" it was basically just apptap, and anysim 1.2...

I don't know which bootloader I have, or which was original on my phone. My phone is broken and I need to take it into an apple retail store for warranty purposes (oh the irony)...

I want to return it to factory settings... all this advice seems wonderful, but since I didn't use any of those methods in my unlock, I don't know if the advice applies...

THE QUESTION:
Do you know if anysim or apptap changes the bootloader? If it doesn't what does that mean for me and my restore? If it does what does that mean for me and my restore?

I'm getting desperate... can someone help me understand?
 
ZiPhone and iliberty BOTH use AnySIM but you just don't realise as it doesn't say that!

Again you can use BootNeuter and install it from Installer and then relock.

Your bootloader will still be the same as AnySIM does not change the bootloader but it WON'T work unless your bootloader is 3.9.

Remmeber phones from 1.1.2 OTB are all 4.6 bootloader. Before that are all 3.9 bootloader.

BootNeuter will show you your settings the first time you load it up.

I also recommend after you flash the phone you reboot it to get your signal back.

If you want to get it back to factory condition then flash it using bootneuter and put it in recovery mode and restore right after. don't forget to set the phone up as new and activate using itunes if you want it back to official status!

Remember BootNeuter may take 5-10 minutes to complete so be patient and if its quicker then your lucky! lol Don't interupt it by exiting or pressing any buttons and if I was you I would keep an eye on it just to you see if there are any errors (which there shouldnt be)!
 
The only time this might be of any concern is if you have to send it off to Apple for repairs, then maybe, otherwise don't sweat it

For you own purposes, if you want a phone that is locked and OOTB condition (except the bootloader), just restore in iTunes. The phone will appear to you and pretty much anyone else to be in perfect, new condition.
 
how would the genius at the mac store see that i've unlocked my phone if I didn't "flash with bootneuter"?

If you have done a restore in iTunes (no matter what unlocking method), no Mac Genius will be able to tell it had been unlocked on the spot.
 
I agree they won't be able to tell its unlocked BUT they will be able to tell the bootloader isn't correct and if they did decide to factory activate it and put another SIM in they would find its unlocked so its really not worth the risk!
 
so, say i jailbreak my iphone today, just for apps, no unlocking....and i want to get the sdk or any other updates come june...would i then just restore and update firmware? sorry, im not tech savvy like most here :eek:

Yes sir you could restore to factory with itunes, but with pwnage you should be able to jailbreak the new firmware within a day of it coming out, they can already jailbreak the beta of 2.0
 
what about an iPod touch?

I'm trying to re-lock an iPod touch 32 GB that I bought (thus, I don't know how it was unlocked in the first place). Is there anything different when it comes to re-locking iPod Touches?

:) iPod touches can't be unlocked, only jailbroken. Just restore in iTunes and it will be 100% new again
 
So, I bought my iPhone on launch day, and it looks like I'll have to return my phone due to my wifi option being greyed out (restoring isn't fixing it...nothing is). Anyway, seeing as my iphone had the most basic software, I'm assuming that I'll need to reflash my bootloader to 3.9, locked, and un-neutered, and then restore using itunes? I'm using AT&T btw.
