About 10 years ago I purchased 1 specific movie on iTunes. It's not a motion picture or a film, but rather 1 hour project that is essentially like bonus footage from a comedy theater in Chicago that was sold on iTunes for $1.99 back in 2009.

This footage is not available on DVD and only available and only ever released on iTunes as a bonus 1 hour clip for $1.99

Since I purchased this back in 2008, whenever I try to play the video on my MacBook Pro, it states that this video is no longer available in my U.S. region (where I'm from and where I purchased the video). Sucks cause I bought the 1 hour backstage clip for $1.99 but now can't view it.

Then someone recommended using a VPN and tricking iTunes into thinking I was in Canada and then changing my region in iTunes to Canada, which I did and now that 1 hour clip footage is available for me to view on my MacBook Pro. As an aside, my friend did the same thing on his own iMac simply to see if the 1 hour clip was still available for purchase on their computer when locked into the Canada region but the answer there is 'no.'

In other words this footage now only exists to the people that originally purchased the footage for $1.99 back between 2009-2011 and only viewable if said purchaser changes their iTunes region to Canada. I also tried calling the comedy theater explaining all this asking if I could get a copy of this footage but was told that the director of this theater has since changed and the footage is not in the stage theater's catalog; that if any of this very same footage does exist outside of iTunes, it would reside with the original director from back in 2004-2010. I'm still waiting to hear back from the theater sometime next week to see if they can get a hold of that theater director to see if he has the footage and can either email or snail mail it to me in the states.

The good thing is I can view the footage on my iTunes when VPN'd into iTunes Canada and wouldn't mind trying to screen record but Quicktime just records black during playback.

Any help I'm all ears. Thanks everyone!

So Quicktime doesn't allow screen recording of DRM protected material. Is it the same for other screen capture utilities?

Yes. The OS doesn't get to see what's in a DRMed window when Fairplay is used on any Mac for nearly the last ten years, so no software running in the OS can do anything to those pixels.

exactly. I can screen record all I want but always saves as a black screen.

Any reputable third party solutions?

iTunes DRM can be removed, including for 4K movies since last year https://www.macrumors.com/2019/03/07/leaked-aquaman-movie-4k-itunes-breach/
There are several commercial solutions, but I guess you are not willing to pay 30-40$ to remove the DRM from a 2$ movie you own :)
I would suggest a free alternative, but it takes some work: use VirtualBox to install Windows, set-up iTunes and your VPN in Windows and play the movie. Use QuickTime to record the virtual box window.
