How to recover iMac HD using Linux

I'm a bit new to Linux so please bear with me. I have an iMac that the mainboard is shot so I need to recover the data on the HD. I have a laptop with Ubuntu installed and I know I can transfer the files this way to an external HD but it keeps saying it can't transfer the files because of permissions.

How do I get around this because I really need to get these files ASAP.

I never found a way around this. But Linux probably has a way. You need to search out a Linux only board, and see what they say. Very few Mac Users know the answer to your question since almost no Mac Users also use Linux. I have a Ubuntu 14 laptop, and I often had trouble transferring files from using a memory stick to the Laptop from files I copied on the iMac to the memory stick. I often had to reformat the stick on the mac each time before I transferred files into it, or I would get these permissions issues.

So you could try that. Instead of using the drive directly, copy files from the drive on to a fast(usb 3) memory flash drive(like a 16 or 32 gb one), and then put that copy into to your laptop. If you reformat the memory flash drive each time on the mac before you contaminate it by putting it into your linux machine, you can probably do what you want.

Copy and paste the error here so we can see. Generally if you do not care about messing with the permissions of the files you are trying to recover then sudo chown -R user_name:user_name /path/to/drive/to/recover will give you total control over the drive logged in as your user_name once it has been used in a terminal.
