1. I've been using ios 10 beta 1 for a while, and backed up my phone via iTunes to icloud. When beta 2 rolled out, I updated it via OVA.
2. Then during installing process, the phone just got stuck after rebooting, at apple logo screen, with the progress bar missing just one bit and never moving.
3. After waiting for an hour, I decided to force quit. Then the phone entered DFU mode.
4. I connected my phone with itunes on Mac. After itunes detected that this phone, I chose "update" instead of "recover".
5. iTunes downloaded ios 9.3.2 and installed fine. All my apps, photos, contacts are there. But all my messages are gone.

I tried checking itunes, but it says the only backup I have is the one after downloading ios 9.3.2, though I'm pretty sure I had backups before. I also tried somesoftware called phonerescue and no luck.

Anyone can help me? Call me stupid, but those are messages for 5 years, and I really don't want to lose them.:(

Did you have an iCloud back up while you were on iOS 10? If so, update the phone back to iOS 10, then restore your iCloud back up. The reason you were not seeing itunes backups is because you did not archive the back up. When you pluged your phone it over wrote the old back up

Yes, I do have one. But that one is weird as well, coz on my phone it shows the last backup was on June 12, while on icloud webpage it's on July 4th. I'll give that a try, thanks.

The website doesn't show any beta backups as far as I know. (IE doesn't support iOS 10 yet so it won't show iOS 10 backups.)

Yeah I would install iOS 10 and restore from your iCloud backup to get those messages back
Thanks I'll try that.

Then the backup on website should be older than shown on the phone, right? Now it's the opposite.

Anyway, after a closer look, I found my messages still takes up 217MB space in storage, so it should still be there. Just needs to upgrade to ios 10 again to make it visible maybe...

Hi there, I updated my phone to ios 10 again. The Message app is still empty, but the storage shown in setting is 217MB. I connect my phone to itunes, and it still shows no backup except the one made after I recovered from DFU mode to ios 9.3.2. So how can I recover icloud backup?

This is exactly what I have experienced. Pretty annoying. Waiting for a possible solution. I don't want to play with those files myself unless I have no other ways.

No....
I don't have any, other than manually digging into iOS filesystem and try to find something interesting. I cannot do that right now because I cannot create an encrypted local backup.

I created a thread, believe it was moved to trouble shooting that tells you exactly how to recover lost messages and many other things usually lost. I'm on a plane with slow wifi so I don't have a link for you but if you just check my thread creation history you will see it.

You need to restore from the iCloud backup on your phone. You shouldn't need to use iTunes for any of this.

Erase all content and settings then follow the prompts on the phone to set it up. One of the steps will be to decide whether you want to setup as a new phone or restore from a backup.

What? If you backed up to iCloud, just erase all your data on the phone and then restore from that backup

Why not use a data recovery software. Because if you restore from the iCloud or iTunes Backup. All your data should erase first to restore from the backup.

This is a really old thread, over a year old. But based on the OP's opening post, the only backup that was available was out of date. So even restoring those backups would not be able to help the situation.
