How to redownload Yosemite?

Hello guys,

I'm running Yosemite (10.10.1) on my machine but I'd to re-download the installer. I go to the App Store, click "Download" and it says I'm already running the latest version.. blah blah blah, but I can click Continue to download it again. So I click on it.. and nothing happens. I tried so many times. I restarted my computer and I'm still not able to to re-download.

Any thoughts?

Go the the purchases tab in your mac app store.

You should find it there. Click Download.

Ok, I didn't express myself properly.

I went to the App Store -> Purchases and clicked "Download". Then I got this message:

"OS X 10.10.1 is already installed on this computer. Use the Upgrades page to install the 10.10 update of it you would like to download the full OS X installer click Continue."

I click Continue and nothing happens...

Cut & paste the installer now residing in your applications folder to an external (thumb) drive. Unmount this drive when pasted. Restart MAS, go to purchased tab and download the OSX 10.10.1 installer.

EDIT: The original OS X 10.10 is no longer avaliable, because Apple only makes the latest version (public) avaliable for downloading, so that will be 10.10.1

All right. I know what happened and you kind of helped me to figure that out.

After many hours wasted, I found a copy of "Install Yosemite.app" inside my "Downloads/MacOS/Yosemite" folder. When Yosemite came out, I copied the installer to that folder so I could install on my other machines without downloading it again.

After reading what you said: "Cut & paste the installer now residing in your applications folder to an external (thumb) drive", I thought, oh, that's why the App Store is not downloading the installer again. I got rid of the "old" installer and then the App Store was able to download the installer again.

Is there a "standalone URL" in the Apple Software libraries (i.e., logging into Apple Store not required), that will initiate a download of Yosemite?

I've read the posted replies, and don't believe that going to the purchased list in the App store is the best way to do this. Although it worked for you, it could involve problems. The following is the best way to reinstall (but not to do a clean install) the OS.

1. Back up your Mac before you try any such download.
2. Shut down Mac, wait about 30 seconds, and then open the Recovery Disk by clicking the start button and then pressing Command R, which you hold until the Apple shows up.
3. Once the Recovery Disk opens, click on the Install OS Button inside of Disk Utility.
4. Then, depending on the speed of your internet provider, you sit and wait for however long the install takes.

So, imo, always a good idea to have at least one backup external media one can boot/install from (I've got three copies of the installer, one permanently in the computer travel bag, and a bootable clone of my SSD).

I agree with you about having multiple backups. People with older Macs should have a CD that would enable recovery. The only people who would not have a Recovery Disk on Mac or a CD are those that have replaced their HD/SSD; and, they can do an Internet Recovery.

I wasn't trying to reinstall Yosemite on my computer. I just wanted to download the installer to install it on my Hackintosh.

But I agree that the recovery partition is the way to go!

How is this done (bootable clone of SSD)? Carbon Copy or SuperDuper?

Is there a way to do this without a paid app? Or is one of those apps really worth it? I have two macs (for my wife and me) and don't want to buy two copies unless necessary. Thanks.

Apple provides a free utility here that uses a 1GB (or larger) USB key to essentially put Internet recovery on a USB key. You can option key boot to eh key and have the same recovery utility as you would get on a newer Mac with Internet recovery built in.

Also, for the hackintosh route... if you have your <whatever-version--installer.app> file, download Unibeast from tonymacx86's website:

That will create your bootable USB installer.

I have this same problem but nothing lets me download it. I click Download, it pops up with the message, I click continue. Then I go to the Purchases tab, hit Download button, same popup, press continue, nothing happens.

If you have a previous version of the Yosemite installer stored on any of your drives indexed by Spotlight, the download won't start. Either delete the old installer or archive it (zip, dmg,...) and then the download should start.

In case someone else finds this helpful: this is a problem if you have the OS X installer app folder anywhere on Macintosh HD (or apparently any "drives indexed by Spotlight", as noted by dZp). I had moved the folder out of Applications to the root of my Macintosh HD, thinking that would convince the App Store to (re)download OS X (El Capitan), but it only downloaded after removing the folder altogether.

You have to move it to an external drive and disconnect it from your Mac, better is on a thumb drive or a NAS so the MAS can't detect the installers non your system ro update the vanilla installers for you to the latest version. I have stored all the vanilla versions of Mac OS X on my NAS. See my post #5.

I have the same problem. I wiped my Mac HD and reinstalled Yosemite using the net installer without issue. But it is a pain because of connection speed, so I would like a local copy of the installer. Not just to avoid waiting for a download but also for use in VMWare and such.
