I hate glossy screens but as the one on my wife's Macbook never caused much hassle I thought I'd be okay with the iMac 24".

Heck, I used to do product photography and I find myself trying to utilise all the techniques I'd use when taking pictures of silver, or glass, or very shiny plastics - just to look at the screen.

Here is another grey UK day and I can see the window with curtains closed, I see my orange tshirt, a see bits of me dancing around, a perfect reflection of a bookshelf - constant movement, distraction.

All I can think to go is find a black sheet and drop it over the screen and my head - or get a big, huge ugly hood.

I don't want a £1749 no-screen Mac pro. The Mini's too small.

I want this Imac but without the crap glossy screen. The 'it's crap but i'll get used to it keyboard' is okay as I can always buy one of my choosing, is is the mouse with that scratchy nipple thing and right button that works when it wants to. But what about the crap glossy screen.

If it's crap to you, what can we do to help?

With all due respect, you're probably focusing on the reflections and can't relax enough to get beyond them.

I have a 24" glossy, and I used to be a photographer too. I learned early on how to handle reflections, and I love this screen. Apparently you're just not going to be happy with it, so here's what to do:

Get rid of it and get something you like.

If you

don't want a £1749 no-screen Mac pro. The Mini's too small.

then you'll have to figure something else out. Most people love the screen so it's a personal issue and nothing we say will make it any better.

I can't actually believe how glossy this thing is - it's not glossy like the 24" HP thing I use at work, which is just 'plastic glossy' - this thing is 'mirror glossy'. It's Apple deciding to be glossier than anything else around without giving so much of a choice.

The choices for me are use Windows (I love Mac OS X), make a Hackintosh (hassle, and don't want to experiment with a work machine that may be not be 100% reliable), get a MacBook Pro and use it in clamshell 95% of the time, or pay Apple twice as much as I need to to for an overkill Mac Pro.

Oh well, I'll have to make an ugly hood, only use it at night, refer to the book Light, Science, Magic when lighting's tricky, and just wait until there's some sort of third party replacement inlay.
