How to remove apps??

Just wondering of anyone has any suggestions on how I might be able to actually remove an app from my iPhone. Every time I've tried removing an app (tapping the "X" on the icon on my iPhone, deleting the app from my HDD and syncing through iTunes, choosing to sync only checked apps and then un-checking one) my iPhone 3G freezes and requires a restore.

I'VE RESTORED THIS ****ING PIECE OF **** TWENTY-FIVE TIMES SINCE JULY 11TH.

As you can probably imagine, I'm beyond irate at this point and DESPERATELY want a working iPhone. I want to be able to not only install apps, but UNINSTALL them if I see fit. I mean, that isn't too much to ask, is it?????? Does anyone have any idea how to go about doing this?

Have you tried deleting the app from either your phone or iTunes but not both? It could be confusing the phone/iTunes.

Or your phone is fubar'ed and you may need to have Apple look at it.

Yes, I've tried deleting apps from both iTunes and the phone - however - when I delete apps from the phone, it freezes and when it reboots it hangs at the Apple logo. So I can only get so far ...

Yeah, if it is doing that reliably take it to Apple and show them. That should warrant a replacement/new phone easily.

I find that removing apps from your iPhone.Touch works best when done through iTunes.

Just uncheck the app in 'Applications' in your iPhone's status screen (where it has the tabs across the top for "music", etc.) and press apply.

Removing from the iPhone/Touch itself can take a bit of time and the device may or may not reboot itself once or twice during the uninstall. You just have to let it run its course. It does come back from the Apple logo. I've had it hang for as long as 5 minutes before returning to the home screen.

Well, I let it go for about 30 minutes this morning but the time in the status bar said 8:14 when it was actually 8:33, and when I tried tapping the screen, it was unresponsive. Five minutes I could deal with, but waiting thirty minutes with an obviously frozen phone ... ?

Sounds like its frozen.

Installing/removing apps directly from the device is a odd proposition. I generally only do it through iTunes. I only install/delete from my Touch if I have no other alternative.

That's a good question, with a good answer. I've wanted an iPhone since they were unveiled 18 months ago, but since the first iPhone wasn't 3G, I was unable to buy one here in Japan until this month. So it's no surprise that I bought one on launch day, is it? Also, I've been using a jailbroken iPod Touch since last November and had found it not only invaluable as a PDA but rock-solid as well - very stable. In fact, I've never had to restore it.

So after six months of a very dependable jailbroken iPod, I guess I expected a little more from Apple with my iPhone 3G. I haven't jailbroken it (and don't plan to) and I've done everything 'by the book' but even still, I've had to restore it TWENTY-FIVE TIMES SINCE JULY 11TH. Is it ANY WONDER I would call it a ****ing piece of ****?????

Hmmm, you'd think it would work once after a restore.... I've restored mine once, my battery ran dead and I guess it corrupted all my stuff.

Well, I got a new phone today. I took a picture this morning and was suprised to find it corrupted (the left half of the picture was inverted and flipped) which I'm guessing means faulty memory. So, I got a brand new iPhone today and I'm on my way home now to see if it'll handle its first sync. hehe

I even TRIED to make it crash - I turned it off while installing, moved icons around while downloading/installing, and even installed several apps simultaneously - no matter what I tried, it didn't lock up. THIS IS AMAZING.

Right now I'm syncing with iTunes for the first time - installing about three dozen games and apps. We'll see if it chokes on that, like my old one did - but so far, so good.

Glad to hear that it is working well for you now. Hopefully 2.1 fixes most of the crashing and reseting issues.

Thanks, but I spoke too soon. After syncing with my Mac, the new phone did the same thing - it locked up and then froze at the Apple logo when I re-booted. So it seems the problem is with my iMac!

I'm not running anything special - just Leopard (10.5.4) and iTunes 7.7 - everything is up to date. I just downloaded iTunes again from apple.com and re-installed it over my existing install (just in case) and I disconnected my USB hub, connecting the iPhone to the back of the iMac directly (I'm going to have to figure out how to re-rout all my wiring here!) ... Hopefully it'll work this time, but I'm not holding my breath.

Also, the iPhone I got today has a piece of dust under the screen (whereas the old one did not) ... This whole experience has been just plain AWFUL, from the start. To think I was chomping at the bit for 18 months to get my hands on an iPhone, only to have this kind of nightmare experience with it.

Try dragging all your songs/videos out of itunes onto a external drive then delete your itunes library. Make a new one and restore your iPhone.

P.s. I wanted an iPhone 3G but im locked into a Plan is the ipod touch as good a replacement if you dont mind losing the phone, GPS, and camera??

I have a fine working phone and a GPS and Since im a photographer the camera isnt needed.

I've never been able to restore from a backup. The three times I tried (July 11-13) restoring from three different backups, the iPhone failed to boot and needed a second restore immediately.

Well that answers that question. I forget where the backups are held (I am not in front of my Mac) but you should probably delete them. Then sync your iPhone and see if it bombs out again.

Yeah, I've deleted all my backups and now I'm trying something new. I've deleted all of my apps from iTunes and my HDD and I''ve unchecked the 'Sync Apps' box ... having to install them one-by-one on the phone sucks, BUT it works. After my experience today I realized that my phone is fine until I sync with iTunes. Leaving iTunes out of the equation (as far as apps go) seems to be doing the trick.

Go figure.

Definitely sounds like something is hosed with iTunes. Maybe a reinstall is in order? I dunno if you would have to Archive and Install the OS just to make sure though.

Actually, I re-installed iTunes last night with no effect. And I'm reluctant to reinstall the entire OS when in all likelihood it's just sloppy coding on Apple's part, something a reinstall would not fix in the first place.

I guess I'll wait it out for iTunes 7.8 and the new firmware. I've been feverishly sending crash reports to Apple, hopefully they look at one or two of them (I think the first ten or so were not laced with expletives)
