Here is a way I found to replace the glass on the iphone 2g. I have not tried it on the 3g. Should work the same, First of all apple does not make this very easy at all. They have glued the glass to the LCD so it seems that you can not take off the glass with out breaking the LCD. Well you can if you careful
Please remember before you try to take it on, it is not easy and you could mess up you LCD. If you do I guess you can order a new one on internet.
Here are some tools you will need. First get the replacement glass off ebay. 19.95 the one I got OEM replacement. Two types of razor knife blades one stiff like a utility blade and one that comes for a box cutter that is flex able. Also some goo gone, and contact cement. Cotton Swabs.
I have included some pictures so you can see how it is done.
First thing you want to do is start at the top or bottom because they are not glued nearly as good. When you get to the LCD you will see that there is a film of glue holding the glass on want you want to do is use your razor blade as a scraper but keep it at a very low angle so you can slide alone the LCD with out scratching it.It will work best if you can get the blade under the glass but all the way down to the LCD so your leaving some glue behind. It will also work best if you can use a prying motion, also being careful not to dig or scratch the LCD. I used some goo gone to help with getting to glue off by applying it with Cotton swabs, but be care full I used a little much and it got under the lcd but did not hurt anything once it dried.
This process is very labor intensive it took me 2 hours to get the glass off. You can switch between the stiff and flexable blade depending on what works best for you.
Once you take the glass off. You will need to clean the LCD just like you would any other.
Then take some contact cement and and your cotton Swab and apply some to the 4 corners of the iphone and the new glass. Then lay the glass in place and there you have it. A new iphone for 30 dollars. Yes the touch screen still works, I have not had any problems out of it. Enjoy
