My friend has a 3GS, jailbroken (untethered), running 3.1.2. It started in a reboot loop earlier today. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot that so I told him his best bet would just be to restore to 3.1.2 via DFU and then re-jailbreak etc. However, if he does Restore, iTunes wants him to upgrade to 3.1.3.

I had him download the 3.1.2 .ipsw file and do an alt-click Restore, select the file, and restore that. However, he got a message saying "The Iphone "Iphone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." I found Saurik's page, had him edit /etc/hosts to point to Saurik's server and try again, and he gets the same error. I'm not positive he had his SHSH on Saurik's server but don't see why he wouldn't.

Am I forgetting anything?

He was able to get the phone out of DFU and it booted up normally (naturally). iTunes is giving him crap about syncing; he might need to restore via DFU anyways, but at least now we can get his SHSH.

If he opens up Cydia it says "This device has a pending TSS request." I assume Saurik's servers are no longer accepting SHSHs? In which case we'd need to back it up via other means, right? (By other means, I mean: http://modmyi.com/forums/3g-s-downg...gs-restore-verification-server-ecid-shsh.html)

Apple is no longer signing verification requests for 3.1.2. Unless you have 3.1.2 on file already, neither you nor saurik can cache it at this point.

Yeah, I just saw that on his twitter feed. So if my friend's phone acts up again he's SOL and has to upgrade to 3.1.3?

Quick question, so there's no way to do a restore if you don't have an internet connection in your mac/pc? I mean if iTunes is giving you crap about signing couldn't ou try disconecting your mac/pc from the internet? I know there's gotta be a simple explanation of why you can't do this but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Apple likes to maintain as much control as possible. iTunes will check with Apple's servers to see if the firmware is legit and after updated will activate your phone. The newest release of FW 3.1.3 is what many think is aimed directly at the jailbreak community.
Update and lose your jailbreak and unlock possibly forever. In theory anything that can be done with code can be undone, but Apple is always widening their reach of what they will allow you to do with your phone

Does this mean I was able to store my ECID on Sauriks server? It gave me the make my life easier option.

Yeah, my friend has the same TSS Request Pending message. I wasn't sure if it was something that was waiting for Apple or Saurik's servers. Apparently it's Apple, which means he'll be waiting quite a while................

Upgrade from 3.1 to 3.1.2

I just bought an 32gb iPhone 3gs that came with 3.1 on it to replace my old iTouch that I had JB'd on 3.1.2. I was able to use Blackra1n to JB my phone on the 3.1, but I have some apps from my iTouch that apparently require 3.1.2 to run. I need to know if there is any way to upgrade my device to 3.1.2 no that apple has quit signing it. Cydia says my SHSHs are on file for 3.1.3, and I have tried following the instructions for downgrading back to 3.1.2 only i did not try to put my phone in DFU or restore modes before attempting the upgrade as I am afraid of losing my 3.1 JB. I had a 16gb model for a couple days and the JB failed, and I was forced into upgrading to 3.1.3, and am hoping to avoid that this time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Jason

It means you have stored 3.1.3, not 3.1.2. The replies above explained this.

It amazes me how so many people failed to store their SHSH blobs when they could. After all, EVERY TIME Cydia opened you were given the opportunity, but so many just ignored it, didin't even bother to research what it was or if it was important. Now they are crying for another way out !

If your current jailbreak is untethered you can make or obtain a custom 3.1.3 firmware made with PwnageTool and use that to restore in recovery (not DFU) mode. This will give you a phone jailbroken on 3.1.3 with 5.11.07 baseband preserved. Please be aware that if your phone ever gets stuck in DFU mode you will be forced to upgrade to the official 3.1.3 firmware and lose your ability to jailbreak.
