I could save it in notepad but it is not useable. is there a way to save it for a call without adding it to the contacts since it may be a one time call?

any number that is called by you or made to you is automaticaly saved into your "Recent" tab of your iphone if you remember the # then yiu can just click it from there

what I mean is if your on the phone and someone gives you a phone number how can you save it so you can dial it when you are done with that call? you can type it into notepad while on the phone but you can't use the number from there.
could I copy and paste from the notepad and paste into the dialer?

No just push the home button during the call. Then open up the address book/contacts app. You can add a new contact/number there. and save it. No note pad required ;)

that works but if it is a one time call I wonder if there is a better way? I could make a contact just for that of course. just change it as needed.
