I use Apple Mail to have one IMAP (Gmail) and one POP account from an internet service provider. The POP account from an ISP will soon be deleted due to change in ISP. How should I do to save the POP account. I am not planning to have a POP account from my new ISP.

You can't save the account if your ISP is discontinuing it. I think though what you mean is that you would like to save all the mail from that account?

You can export all the mail from that account to a folder(s) on your hard drive or a flash drive. You could also create new mail folders with Apple Mail and move the old POP mail there. Just use folder names that make sense and do not duplicate your gmail IMAP folders.

Much depends on how much mail you have from your old POP account to how you archive it.

Yes, I want to save the contents of the POP account. What are the differences between “export”, “save” or “archive” ? Which process(s) keep the original data format. Also, do each process by hand one by one or collectively? Thanks for your help!

Export will keep the original data format and can be read with the Apple Mail app. You would have to export each mailbox.

As I mentioned above, it might be easier to create new mailboxes under your gmail IMAP account and then move the mail that way. Just be sure to use unique names for the new mailboxes. You can then open the mail the same way as before with Apple Mail.

I have both gmail POP and gmail IMAP accounts and can move mail between them. But when I do, I use unique mailbox names.

Keep in mind that your mail with an IMAP account is on the server unless you move it to another mailbox on your Mac.

If you want the saved, POP email to be accessible from another device…moving it to folders on another IMAP account is the way to go. Another advantage of moving it to the cloud like that is the ease of restoring it in case of computer issues.

Keep in mind that if you were to create folders in an existing IMAP account, named something like "Old POP Inbox" and "Old POP Sent", that the sent items will not display the recipients in the list view as they do in an actual "Sent" folder. Copying the old POP sent items to an actual "Sent" folder on a different account will alleviate that problem. That could be in an existing IMAP or Exchange account you currently use or you could create a new account somewhere just for these old emails (something like mitstoshioldpopaccount@outlook.com).

Thanks! I have email on two devices (iMac and iPad) using Apple Mail. Do I need to do the procedures you suggested on one device or both?

If you're talking about my procedures it depends on what you decide to do. If you create new folders in your IMAP account and move the old POP emails to those folders (use your iMac to do this) then, once the procedure has finished, all you have to do is delete the old POP account from all devices. All the devices will have the new folders in the IMAP account.

If you decide to create a new, second IMAP account and move the email to the Inbox and Sent folders of that account then you'll have to also add the new IMAP account to your iPad and delete the old POP account everywhere.

On my iMac, I created two new folders in my IMAP account and moved the old POP emails to those folders as suggested by both BrianBaughn and chscag. On my iPad, I am keeping the old POP emails until when the POP account is canceled by the ISP. So far it works all right.

Thanks both of you!
