How to save and view .AVI videos on the iPad?

I shot some videos with my Canon SD800 and was hoping it would sync and be viewable on the iPad since they synced and are viewable in iPhoto. I synced up the album but only the pictures show up, not the videos.

I know about Air Sharing HD but I need something where I can play the video's without an internet connection.

Any tips?

Download Handbrake and rip the file to mp4 which you can them import not iTunes.

Crap, thats the only solution? I don't know why I was under the impression that the iPad supported .AVI videos.

Seems very time consuming...I have 7 videos, they are between 30 - 60 seconds long, but it's taking 5+ minutes to do each one and I have to leave the house in about 15 minutes. I was hoping I could load up these videos and take them to the lunch Im meeting someone for to show it to them.

Is there a digital camera out there that records in a format that will work directly with the iPad?

The iPad supports avi as long as it's a specific format called Motion jpeg, which is supposed to be a camera thing, but that's all I know. Alternate theory: did you remember to click the "include videos" checkbox in the iTunes photo sync? It's easy to miss and defaults to off.

If you have a faster computer the conversion doesn't take too long.

I think if you take videos with an iPhone, it saves to a format that the ipad can read directly.

I have started to use AirVideo. You have to install the AirVideo server on your computer, but once you do, you can navigate to your movies directory using the iPad, tell AirVideo to convert your videos, then drag the converted videos to iTunes to sync them... This conversion is a lot faster than Handbrake. Takes about 5 minutes for a hour long (45 mins) TV show.
