I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 13.2.3 and I can't figure out (if it's even possible) to have better privacy for text messages on my lock screen, let me explain.

When I receive a message through Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp and my phone is locked then all I see on my lock screen is "Message" in blue/white (Facebook Messenger) or green (WhatsApp). There is no name or phone number that shows, great privacy feature.

When I receive a text message to my iPhone (SMS or iMessage) I will either see "Message" but with the person's name (if they are saved in my address book) or the entire phone number (if they aren't saved in my address book).

***Also if I recieved a text message after turning off and on my iPhone without unlocking it once then every single message shows the entire phone number (even if the contact is saved in my address book).

Apple loves to talk about privacy, privacy, privacy but these are huge privacy issues to me and I'm sure other people. This seems to be a basic feature (thus why Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp use it for example along with other apps) but I can't seem to figure out how to set it up...if it's even possible for text messages?

I have "Show Previews" turned off under the notifications for messages in settings but nothing. I know I can turn off message notifications from showing on my lock screen but that's stupid...

Please help and thank you!

Perhaps it shows that information when you look at the screen because it recognizes you via Face ID?

No unfortunately, I just spoke with Apple Support through chat and after the representative checked with two departments and multiple technicians they stated Apple just doesn't offer this feature/option.

The representative sent me the link to give feedback which I used but I'm just shocked that Apple doesn't have this feature for text messages...especially with how they keep boasting about privacy?

Go to Settings > Notifications > Messages and then from there, there should be an option to ‘Hide previews’. Select either ‘Never’ or ‘When unlocked’.

That should achieve what you’re after, I think.

By default the notification previews are hidden while the iPhone is locked. The previews show as soon as and only when Face ID scans and unlocks the iPhone.
But if you have “Show Previews” set to “Never” and it still shows the content of the messages after your iPhone is unlocked then that’s probably a bug.

Have you checked for WhatsApp notifications from numbers that aren’t in your contacts to see if it still just says “message” and not show the entire number?
Most privacy measures are developed around the content of the message instead of the number of the sender. But I do agree that it’s a better design to hide the number of the sender that’s not in your contacts while it shows the name for your contacts.

the info you got from apple is correct:
there is no way that you are able to check the show " Notifications on the Lock Screen" and NOT show the Contact (either name if in yr Contacts, or, tel number if not in yr Contacts).

i turned off show Lock Screen for most of my notifications due to privacy reasons.
(and for the additional reason to save battery).

i agree with apple's approach.
i think that an app that would only show "Message" has been received without showing from whom is dumb and would be frustrating.
on either of the three notification areas you can set, i would want to see who it is a message or email from so i can decide if i do something right now or leave it wait.
but at the same time, i of course depends on how you use ur phone.
