How to set so iPad doesn't ask for password

My iPad asks for my password ever time I update an App, even a free one. I just noticed on a friends that it updated automatically without having to input a password. Is there a setting I'm missing that set to auto password?

I have to enter my iTunes password whenever I update an application too. If I have done that soon before I update or download a new application, then it doesn't ask again. This includes downloading paid applications, free ones, and updates. But once some period of time has passed since I last entered my password, it asks for it again.

Personally, I'm very happy it works that way, to keep people out of my account in the event I would lose my device.

That isn't a bug, that is a feature. That buy button is linked directly to your credit card.

I updated an (free) App on a friends iPad and it didn't ask. Also I'm fine with paid Apps needed a password but updating for free has NO effect on my CC. Why does a free update need a password?

It needs your password because it's accessing your iTunes account so it can: make sure you're eligible for the update (you actually bought the app before), and record that you "bought" the update (all updates are free but nonetheless it's still recorded on your account).

I think there's a 10 minute grace period where the App store on the iPad/iPhone won't ask for the password a second time.

To answer everyone's question:
If you're signed into iTunes account in App Store and are within the 10 minute grace period - you will not be asked for your password.
If you're not, you will have to enter your password - even if you're updating a free app. All updates are free - yet password is required for the 10 min. grace period so that you don't mistakingly hit the buy button on some other application as it will charge your card instantaneously (if debit) or longer (if credit).
