Basically, I'd like to create my own home cloud service.

I have heard that this is possible with Lion (as opposed to requiring Lion Server).

I own a Macbook Pro and would like to see how well an OS X based file server works before investing in a Mini to make one.

Anyone have any guides showing how to set this up? I've searched online but it's all so fragmented.

To setup SFTP, all you have to do is enable "Remote Login" in System Preferences -> Sharing. Then, you just use your username and password of the Mac mini.

You can also go with sharing via SMB/AFP, which can also be found under System Pref> Sharing. The best method will depend on how you wish to share, and how secure you want it to be.
